Russian Artists of Foreign Labels: Talking Bush and Pinkshinyultrablast + Shelflife (Part II)

Russian music is being published more and more by foreign labels. Afisha talked to some musicians and their label representatives about how they met, the question of whether Russian artists should focus on the west, and if this Russianness is somehow significant.

TALKING BUSH (Nikita Bushmanov) :: musician

I started Talking Bush in 2015. Ed Mazzucco from Shelflife sent my music (the track Tell Me) to his friend Jose Antonio, who put me in contact with a few of his blogger friends and really helped me out. I even found him on Facebook and thanked him. It’s funny actually, but with Tell Me there were a lot of serious people suddenly interested, which had never happened to me before. I’m just an internet musician, if you can call it that. Before Talking Bush my main project was Neverover! from 2010 on. I always shared my music for free, and did my own PR in the beginning. As a result, I was somewhat well-known in the chip music scene in Russia. I run both projects on my own. I like doing everything by myself in music – it’s a kind of thing where I have to, so that everything is just the way I want it.

It didn’t all happen at once – Shelflife isn’t Sony Music, it’s a small indie label. At first when I checked their website, I thought, once again I’ve reached a dead end. But then I saw familiar names which made me smile, and I checked out some of the ones I didn’t know – I realized at that point that this is what I needed for releasing my EP. A great label with great music. Who gives a shit that it’s small – the music is relevant. I could have pulled the EP together in a week but I wrecked it a bit in terms of recording vocals so everything had to be delayed. Plus I was just hanging out and procrastinating for about a month, but really, it will all be ready soon – I was bringing it together little by little this month. The labels weren’t interested in my music, it was always me writing them. Neverover! had releases on 8081 and Qulture Production. As for the dividends, I don’t really care for nor think about them. If they pay me something, that’s great, but I don’t need the money. And the PR I can do for myself.

I don’t need a label for now, but I will in a few years, according to my plan. It’s necessary so that all the snobby people can hear it too, the ones who are swayed not by the music but where it comes out on. Those are sad people. But I’m not guided by them. Thanks to the label, my music can reach more of the ordinary people, who are the ones that I write for. Yes, for me it’s important to deliver it to them.

Now I’m getting pumped in every sense. Talking Bush is far from being my final project. In a few years, I’ll come up with something even better if I need to – and so on and so forth. Until the time comes to crawl over to the more serious labels. Right now my music has a raw, warm sound – it doesn’t veer mainstream. It’s not that I want to be a mainstream musician in the future – I want to be different in my own way, and I want to do it well.

“I’ve been a fan of Pinkshinyultrablast for quite some time – I really liked their first EP. Last year their British label Club AC30 asked if we wanted to work on their new album. Of course we wanted to! Everything Else Matters is a sublime recording. I found out about Talking Bush through a friend on Facebook – I really liked his tracks. We are happy to work with Nikita on his future recordings.

The fact that these musicians are from Russia didn’t really play a role. We work with bands from all over the world – the only goal is to make great music. These days everyone lives online, everything is on Facebook, so what’s the difference if the musician is 40 km from us or 20,000? Actually, we’ve worked with Russian musicians in the past – White Wishes. And in general, I really like a lot of Russian groups: Motorama, Aerofall, Palms on Fire, Galway – and that’s just the recent ones.”
